My Birth Control Failed: What Do I Do?

You may be experiencing pregnancy symptoms even though you used birth control. If your home pregnancy test results are positive, take time to process your thoughts. You do not need all the answers right away.

Remember, you are not alone! There are options and resources available for people facing unexpected pregnancies. Read this article for several steps to help you make the best decision.

Schedule Pregnancy Testing and Ultrasound

Although at-home kits are usually reliable, confirmation through medical-grade testing offers certainty and eliminates any possible “what-ifs.” If your result is positive, obtaining an obstetric ultrasound - no matter what decision you are considering for your pregnancy - is an important first step. The ultrasound reveals the following information:

  • The location of your pregnancy. If your pregnancy has implanted anywhere outside the uterus you could have an ectopic pregnancy. In this instance, you would be advised to seek immediate help at an emergency room.

  • The gestational age. This is determined by measuring the dimensions of the pregnancy. Gestational age is an important factor in your decision-making process.

  • The viability of your pregnancy. If a heartbeat cannot be detected, you may naturally miscarry. In this case, you should follow up with your physician.

At Zoe, A Women’s Center, we offer no-cost pregnancy testing, pregnancy screening, and options counseling. The pregnancy screening includes medical-grade testing (we can help you decide the best time to take it) and a no-cost, limited-obstetric ultrasound. Options education allows you to consider how you will move forward.
