Roe v. Wade Overturned: Separating Fact from Fiction

Facing an unplanned pregnancy can be daunting, but not knowing what is legal and what is not in your state can add to the pressure you may be feeling.

With Roe v. Wade recently overturned, people are looking for answers and it can be hard to determine what is actually true for your state with all the information available online.

Read this article for common myths that have spread online and learn the facts about abortion access and healthcare after the recent Supreme Court ruling.

Myth #1: Abortion is Illegal in All 50 States

The ruling by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade means abortion is no longer a federally-protected right. Abortion access or restriction will now be left up to every state to decide.

In Maine, abortion is legal up to the point of viability, unless the woman’s life or health is at risk.

Myth #2: Women Won’t Receive the Healthcare They Need

There is no language that prohibits doctors from administering care for women with natural miscarriages, high-risk, or ectopic pregnancies.

In fact, every law that restricts abortion always gives a general exception for the life endangerment of the woman.

Myth #3: Contraception is Illegal

Contraception is legal everywhere in the United States, including Maine, and there is no sign that this will be changing.

In our state, many insurance providers are required to offer coverage of some kind of contraceptive.

Next Steps

If you are considering an abortion, an ultrasound is always a practical first step to gather the information you’ll need to determine abortion eligibility (age and viability). Ultrasounds can also determine whether or not the pregnancy is located outside the womb (ectopic) which would require immediate medical attention.

We offer no-cost pregnancy services at our clinic. We do not perform or refer for abortions; however, we do provide a confidential, pressure-free environment where you can ask questions about your options and the pregnancy process.

We are here to support you, so schedule your appointment today!
