If you think you might be pregnant, you may be searching online for answers. One option you may come across is the abortion pill. There is a lot of information online, and it can sometimes feel overwhelming to sort through what is accurate and helpful.
At Zoe, A Women’s Center, we believe every person deserves clear, evidence-based information and a place where they can ask questions without pressure or judgment. This article is meant to help you better understand what the abortion pill is and what you may want to consider before making a decision.
What Is the Abortion Pill?
The abortion pill is a medication abortion that typically involves two different drugs taken at separate times:
Mifepristone is taken first. It blocks progesterone, a hormone needed for a pregnancy to continue.
Misoprostol is taken later, usually 24–48 hours afterward. This medication causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy through bleeding and cramping.
Medication abortions are usually taken during the early weeks of pregnancy.
What Can the Process Be Like?
Every person’s experience can be different. Some women report heavy bleeding and cramping that may last for several hours or longer. Others may experience side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Fever or chills
- Headache
- Diarrhea
In some cases, additional medical care may be needed if the abortion is incomplete or if complications occur.
Because of this, it can be important to understand what to expect physically and when medical attention may be needed.
Why Confirming Your Pregnancy Matters
Before making decisions about your pregnancy, it can be helpful to confirm a few important details, such as:
- Whether the pregnancy is located in the uterus
- How far along the pregnancy may be
- Whether there are any medical concerns that need attention
These factors can affect what options are available and what care may be needed.
At Zoe, A Women’s Center, we offer medical-grade pregnancy testing and education at no cost to you, so you can better understand your situation and the choices available to you.
